British Values
British Values at Woodfield Infant School
British Values is a government initiative to teach KS1 students the values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance.
The Department for Education published guidance on promoting British values in schools as of November 2014 “to create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.”
British values are one of the many reasons why we should be proud to live in Britain!
We promote these values at Woodfield through a number of curriculum activities and experiences.
Democracy example: Book Voting Stations in all classes
Rule of Law example: Our school values of 'be kind, be responsible, be hardworking' gives children rules to live by during the school days. These values are celebrated when children are spotted behaving in 'The Woodfield Way'. Through E-Safety teaching children are also taught the rules we follow when using technology.
Individual Liberty example: Through our curriculum discussions, children are taught that everybody has a right to free speech and to share their opinions as long as they are respectful of others. We welcome varying views and beliefs and all are treated with fairness and kindness.
Mutual Respect example: Our PSHE and RE curriculum offer ensures children develop a mutual respect for people in our world. We celebrate differences and those things that make us unique.
Tolerance of those with different Faiths and Beliefs example: Our RE curriculum offer ensures children have exposure to different faiths and cultures and children learn to respect varying views and opinions. Our reading and writing spine contains culturally diverse texts to promote discussion throughout each year.
